Book shopping anyone?

Trying to save money over the holidays is an impossible feat within itself. However, add an impulsive book buying habit to that and you've got a problem. Well, not a problem per se, but let's just say if I ever want to save up for something important then I'm going to have to leave my card at home. That being said, I have nothing to save for yet, so here we are! Neck deep in pre-orders, proofs and many, many books! Yaaaay! Over December and the start of January I've found stories I have fallen in love with, books I desperately want to read and covers I've pretty much been fawning over since I've purchased them. So without further ado, let the fan-girling commence.

My current read is Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. The gold foil moths are giving me intense tattoo vibes, as I'm sure they have lots of other people. I haven't got too far into this book yet, I did start it a while ago but between being sick over Christmas, work and being in a bit of a reading slump, I haven't been motivated. Now that's not to say this this book is the reason for my lack of motivation, because it is not. The writing is superb, I love the mystery and I love Lazlo Strange and his aesthetic. So far all I know about him is that he spends all of his time in a library surrounded by books and quite likes it that way. Someone after my own heart.

This book drops on March 28th 2017 and I can't wait to see it on the shelves.

Goodreads synopsis:

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around— and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

I recently finished a beautiful book, and I've busy convincing lots of other people to read it too. Booksellers and customers alike, I'm sure people are getting fed up of me going on. But this is my blog, and I do what I want. I've already tweeted with the author about how much I love her book but now I'm going to TALK ABOUT IT SOME MORE! Caraval by Stephanie Garber

For fans of The Night Circus, the slightly twisted, the plot twist lovers and magically inclined, read this book. I'm not asking. It's for your own good. You can thank me later. This book is everything you'd want from a story set on a mysterious island, where a coveted ticket to take part in a special performance is a childhood dream come true for Scarlett. Or is it?
I love the characters, I love how the story has you questioning everything, I love how Stephanie Garber has managed to leave me infatuated with a character that was barely in the book. This is why I need a book two.

You haven't got long to wait for this one, January 31st 2017 and you can have it all to yourself. I personally have a signed and numbered first edition from Goldsboro Books pre-ordered which I can't WAIT to get. If I haven't convinced you to pre-order one for yourself, it is the most highly anticipated book YA of 2017 on goodreads so... take a leap of faith.

Goodreads synopsis:

Welcome to Caraval, where nothing is quite what it seems.

Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show.

Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father.

When the sisters' long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show's mastermind organiser, Legend.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.

Fire meets frost in a thrilling tale from the perspective of a seventeen year old girl called Ruby, a Fireblood. Frostblood by Elly Blake is my next read on my TBR, and in waiting for my reading slump to disappear this book finally came out! I'm really hoping for some brilliant characters and much mayhem. And big battles. Ooooh I'm so excited to read this! I've already taken the test online to see whether I'm a Fireblood or a Frostblood and apparently I'm a Frostblood. Here's hoping that's a good thing! I'm sure I'll find out soon.

You can already pick up your copy of Frostblood now! If you needed an excuse to go to the bookshop, there it is!

Goodreads synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a fireblood who must hide her powers of heat and flame from the cruel frostblood ruling class that wants to destroy all that are left of her kind. So when her mother is killed for protecting her and rebel frostbloods demand her help to kill their rampaging king, she agrees. But Ruby's powers are unpredictable, and she's not sure she's willing to let the rebels and an infuriating (yet irresistible) young man called Arcus use her as their weapon.

All she wants is revenge, but before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to take part in the king's tournaments that pit fireblood prisoners against frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her and from the icy young man she has come to love.

Fast-paced and compelling, Frostblood is the first in a page-turning new young adult three-book series about a world where flame and ice are mortal enemies—but together create a power that could change everything.

For the past few months at work, every time I remember to I search for my highly anticipated titles on our system to see if they're available for pre-order. For the longest of times A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas was not on there, much to my disappointment. Then after the mayhem that was the Christmas shopping period I once again tried my luck and did some searching, and lo and behold, there it was.
So yes, I finally have my paperback pre-ordered at Waterstones and whilst I know I will have to wait a couple of weeks for the hardback to hit the UK I AM STILL SO PSYCHED. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS BOOK. I NEED TO KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN TO LUCIEN AND FEYRE AND CASSIAN AND AZRIEL AND NESTA AND ELAIN AND AMREN AND RHYS AND MOR AND BASICALLY EVERYONE EXCEPT TAMLIN FUCK TAMLIN. I NEED THIS BOOK.

If you haven't read A Court of Thorns and Roses yet then you have no idea what I'm talking about, but you should. This retelling of Beauty and The Beast is one of my all time favourite book series. A Court of Mist and Fury was my favourite book of 2016, and the fact that it was for a lot of other people too shouldn't put you off, the hype is justified. Trust me.

There isn't a cover yet for this book so I'm going to share the inspired cover that Lexi on Goodreads has made herself, which I imagine is going to be very true to its word.

If you're up to date with this series like me, then we have to wait until the 2nd of May 2017 to feel the feels of feelings. However, if you haven't started this series yet, now is a good time to catch up. I guarantee you everyone will be talking about this book when it is released into the world, more so then they are already talking about it. Also don't read this synopsis if you haven't caught up, spoilers!

Goodreads synopsis:

Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's maneuverings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit-and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.

As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords-and hunt for allies in unexpected places.

In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.

Executions, ambushes, sex, a floating market, and death are just some of the things V.E. Schwab promises in A Conjuring of Light, and my god am I excited for all of the above. So far we've only seen some snipits of what is yet to come, my favourite being:

Alucard leaned across the desk.
"Do you even know how to sail, mas vares?" The honorific was said with serpentine sweetness. "I didn't think so."
"How hard can it be," snarled Kell, "if they let someone like you do it?"
A glint of mischief flashed in the captain's eyes.
"I'm rather good with hard things. Just ask-"
The blow caught Alucard across the cheek.

I love this series and I recommend it to anyone who goes near the Sci-Fi/Fantasy and/or YA section at work. Four Londons, magic, pirates, a magical coat and treachery. Sound awesome? I agree. I have already been hurt by this series and I expect to be hurt even more soon. Especially considering this is going to be the final for the trilogy. *sadface*

This gorgeous book will be mine on the 28th of February 2017. If you haven't read the Shades of Magic series then stop what your doing, go to your nearest bookshop and do yourself a favour, buy it, read it, love it. And don't read this next synopsis because spoilers.

Goodreads synopsis:

London's fall and kingdoms rise while darkness sweeps the Maresh Empire—and the fraught balance of magic blossoms into dangerous territory while heroes and foes struggle alike. The direct sequel to A Gathering of Shadows, and the final book in the Shades of Magic epic fantasy series, A Conjuring of Light sees Schwab reach a thrilling culmination concerning the fate of beloved protagonists—and old enemies.

One more book, just to stop myself from giving you a super long list.
This is one I've found out about only recently, and I kind of really love the premise of it. I think you'll agree with me when I say that most people read fantasy to escape reality, if only for a while. But wouldn't you love it if the two worlds combined? Wouldn't you LOVE it if your favourite character walked up to you and just started chatting? (Unless your favourite character is Smaug, in which case, run.) Traveler by L.E. DeLano is a story about just that. I am so intrigued by this, and luckily I don't have to wait long before I can sink my teeth into it.

On the 1st of March I will be spending even more money. This is such a lush cover, 100% its going to be face out on my shelf.

Goodreads synopsis:

Jessa has spent her life dreaming of other worlds and writing down stories more interesting than her own, until the day her favorite character, Finn, suddenly shows up and invites her out for coffee. After the requisite nervous breakdown, Jessa learns that she and Finn are Travelers, born with the ability to slide through reflections and dreams into alternate realities. But it’s not all steampunk pirates and fantasy lifestyles…Jessa is dying over and over again, in every reality, and Finn is determined that this time, he’s going to stop it… this Jessa is going to live.

I apologise if this post has already cost you some money. But not really because this is what money was made for - spending.

All the packages

I've pre-ordered quite a bit over the past few months, and for some reason they've all come out at roughly the same time as me expecting other deliveries. So the past couple of weeks have been present after present at my door. I'm not complaining. My bank account is but I'm going to ignore it's desperate screaming just as I always have.

I had a little dilemma getting my hardback of Empire of Storms, I ended up having to order it online because of distributors and such, and I was worried about how long I waited before doing anything and if there would even be any hardbacks left. (In hindsight there's always hardbacks for Sarah J Maas' books so really I would have been fine.) I've not got far into the book yet, maybe 150 pages or so but I can already see things are starting to escalate, and I'm already loving the vibes between certain characters. hahahahahah

The new thin pages to accommodate for the sheer size of this book are super smooth. Like rub-your-face-against-it smooth. I'm somewhat terrified of touching it and ripping them, which is why I also have a paperback to use for the actual reading. Soon enough Sarah J Maas is going to have her own shelf in my room, she's taken over 90% of my top shelf already!

I have so many candles in my house, most of them are Yankee Candles. Fragrances like Apple Cinnamon Cider, Black Cherry, and French Lavender. But I keep seeing people on instagram with book themed candles which look amaaazing. I came across Castle of Fables on Etsy and ended up being in a high speed chase to buy some of her highly coveted soy candles.

Ironteeth Clan is probably one of the prettiest candles I own. It has a strong fragrance of chocolate and vanilla. Whilst this is a little bit sweet for my tastes, I still love this candle and it's going to sit on my bookshelf in front of Empire of Storms.

Rhysand is definitely something that I can see fits well with his character. Jasmine, obviously. Citrus for his sharp tongue (heuhhueehhhuehuhehueh), and Noir and Violets for his dark side. The pale lilac colour really goes nicely with the Jasmine scent.

Rowan Whitethorn is perfect. Snow, Pine and Wind. Exactly as it is in the books. It smells so fresh and obviously pine and snow remind me of winter so of course I love it. The amber and spices in it as well suit me so well I just ugh
GIVE ME TEN.

I missed out on getting The Night Court candle this time, but I'm desperate to get it the next time CastleofFables reopens their etsy shop.

Apple Cinnamon Cider is basically Christmas in a jar. It smells so nice and it calms me down so much. Work got a very early copy of Gemina! I know I'm probably missing out on a very nice hardback, the hardback for Illuminae is gorgeous, but as I have a paperback for Illuminae I'm quite happy with the two matching. Plus I'm not actually sure if the hardback will be coming to the UK? I've only ever seen it in the US, like in Barnes and Noble. As much as I like books, I don't like overseas charges. And of course I had to pick up a copy of Crooked Kingdom. I also entered Books with a Bite's Crooked Kingdom pre-order giveaway! I didn't actually expect to win though! I'm the unluckiest person ever, my Goodreads giveaway list is just a long list of 'no'. The first 100 pre-orders get a tote bag and a signed bookplate! Lucky me!

Forgive the crappy frame but look at the beauty within it. Charlie Bowater makes beautiful original artwork, this one The Court of Dreams is just absolutely gorgeous. Even more so in real life than it was on the website. I don't really buy artwork lightly, so when I do I'm essentially saying "I want to look at this for the rest of my life." The frame I bought is just a little bit too small for what I want, the signature is half covered and I think I want to get a frame with a white border to really centralize the print. The frame didn't come with the print, I bought it separately without thinking about it too much! Whoops!

All in all I probably need to stop spending money, maybe I will one day. But now that we're seeing more scarves, gloves, pumpkin spice, slipper socks and generally cosy things, I'm going to want to build a fort of books and stay there forever. So that whole 'saving money' thing might be a little bit tricky.

Listen to the soundtrack of my life for the months of September and October:

I regret nothing.

Okay, so I just spent a lot of money on bookish things and I don't regret it at all. Some of you might remember my post about A Court of Mist and Fury fanart and how I gushed over Charlie Bowaters prints and how I wanted to spend lots and lots of money on her stuff. Well...

I did it! After getting money for my birthday yesterday and having no clue what to do with it, I was prowling through my favourited shops on Etsy practically made an instant purchase. I'm sooo excited for my print to get here, I have a space on my wall which desperately needs filling and I know exactly whats going to go there. Pictures to come! Here's a glimpse of Charlie Bowaters prints. 'The Court of Dreams' is still avaliable here!

Next up, I had been looking for a UK seller for some amazing soy candles featuring fragrances titled 'The Night Court', 'Rowan', and various fantasy themed things, and on twitter I saw castleoffables and a pretty picture of a candle called 'Ironteeth Clan'. After browsing through their page and clicking on their Etsy link, I was debating how much I wanted to spend on overseas shipping and then I saw 'London, England'. As the shop was due to be reopened this weekend I set up an email alert so that I would be instantly told. Unfortunately, that email must have gone straight to my junk as I only found out by people tweeting about their shopping! So I pretty much flew out of bed, grabbed my laptop, and started adding to cart quite swiftly. Within 3 hours everything was gone!

I managed to pick up 'Rowan', 'Ironteeth Clan' and 'Rhysand'. I did have 'The Night Court' in my cart but as I was paying it sold out! As that was the one that I had been looking at for a while I was a little disappointed, but I've been reassured they'll be restocking soon. I'll just have to be quicker next time!

I love bookish things and I love the detail that people put into their products. Etsy is usually where I find all of these things as well, its such a great platform for people to make something and put it out in the world for people to enjoy. If I had any shred of talent then I might have made an Etsy shop by now. Unfortunately the best I can do is baking, and even then I prefer to bake for the pleasure as opposed to on demand. Instead I'm quite happy to enjoy other peoples creativity!

16.9.16

Whoops.

I had intentions of uploading a few times over the past week, I really have. But between work and the insatiable need to read Sarah J Maas I have been a little preoccupied.

Since I last updated there has been some bloody great booking news! Sarah J Maas released the fifth installment to the Throne of Glass series, Empire of Storms. I've only just started reading it today and I'm so excited. The series just keeps getting better and better, and I can't wait to see what happens to Manon and her Thirteen, Rowan and Aelin, and Dorian of course! AND- Throne of Glass is going to be a tv series! It's gonna be called Queen of Shadows and I think their aim is to have a 'Game of Thrones' like quality to it. Apparently it's going to start from book one too! If they manage to pull that off then holyshitwowomfgyesplease. I don't know how they're going to do some of the characters justice though, like Rowan, or Lysandra. Or even the Fae transformations. I might just have to ignore all of this until there's more news.

I also picked up a copy of A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir! I didn't think I was going to get the hardback, as my copy of An Ember in the Ashes is in paperback, but after seeing the pretty, shiny cover I gave into temptation. I think the people I work with are starting to understand that my flurry of buying lots of books when I first started at Waterstones is going to be a long term thing.

(picture taken by http://penguinteen.tumblr.com/)

So many books are becoming tv series/movies!

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas is going to be a Tv series called Queen of Shadows! I'm still freaking out about this!

Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman is going to be a BBC Tv series! Adapted by the same guy that brought you The Youngers, Levi David Addi, and Matthew Graham who has worked on things like Doctor who!

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is going to be a movie! Directed by Elizabeth Banks who you might also know as Effie Trinket.

Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman is going to be a movie directed by Brad Pitt! I'm suuuper excited to see where this one goes as I loved the book.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is going to be another Sci-Fi movie! Directed by none other than Steven Spielberg!

And basically everything John Green writes is going to be made into something.

Of course Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs comes out on September 30th! I already have plans to go and see it!

It's too much. Too much excitement for me to deal with. All these things I want to do and buy and not an infinite bank account. -cries forever-

7.9.16

Daunting TBR or spoilt for choice?

I have two sets of full bookshelves, and two stacks of books that I haven't read yet, ranging from things like Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo to Cujo by Stephen King, there are at least over 120 books between them. And today I bought two more books. Tomorrow I plan on buying another one. I also have like five on order. I can't stop myself. It's such an obsession, an expensive obsession, but I love it.

Most of the time when I'm close to finishing a book, I have a rough idea about what I want to read next. Sometimes I actually follow through with that idea, and sometimes I completely change my mind because maybe a new book has come out, maybe someone suggested something to me, or maybe I just fancied something different. For instance, I made a bit of a plan for the next couple of months. I'm currently reading three books at the same time, Nevernight by Jay Kristoff, Red Rising by Pierce Brown, and Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas. I started reading Red Rising quite a while ago and I've been struggling to pick it back up. It's written well, I really like all the unique language and world building, but something about it just isn't grabbing me. As I went to YALC this year and picked up an early copy of Nevernight, I couldn't stop myself from starting it asap despite already reading two other books. And last, I've only just started reading Queen of Shadows in preparation for meeting Sarah J Maas in October in London. My plan was to read Heir of fire (which I've done), Queen of Shadows, and Empire of Storms, all by Sarah J Maas.

After I've caught up with all of those, I plan on reading either Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, or The Graces by Laure Eve. BUT- I may just change my mind! I know some people are so completely stressed when they have a massive TBR, like they feel pressured to read their books as fast as they can in order to 'catch up', but I really like just having so many books to choose from! It's like visiting a small library, lots of choices. I feel like if I only had five books that I hadn't read and I didn't fancy any of them, I would be very frustrated and end up forcing myself to read something I wasn't really in the mood for.

Maybe some people view it as a task, like how they say to eat five fruits and veg a day because it's good for you. Unless that's part of your daily routine then eating that amount can definitely be a task!
But reading shouldn't be. If you've bought a book with the intention of losing yourself in another world, then don't force yourself to be in that other world! Enjoy it! Pick it up when you feel like it! You don't have to read just because it's 'good for you'. Read because you like it. And soon you'll be like me, reading because it's literally your life force.

17 days left!

The Throne of Glass series. In my eyes, something everyone should read. From the author of my favourite book at the moment, A Court of Mist and Fury, Throne of Glass is the first in the series, there's also a prequel called The Assassins blade which personally I believe has the most badass cover.

Goodreads synopsis for Throne of Glass:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her ... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Sarah J Maas has created a book that definitely bridges the gap between 'teen' fiction and general fiction. Her writing is flawless, her characters feel so real, and this series has become an addiction. From Throne of glass, The Assassins Blade, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, and Queen of Shadows to Empire of storms, set to come out in just 17 days! This is the only series that I actually have two copies of every book in paperback and hardback.

I would recommend Sarah J Maas to anyone who reads. And anyone who doesn't read. Basically you should be reading anything this woman writes because she is a Goddess.
